CEN

CEN is the European Committee for Standardization. Its Members are the National Standardisation Bodies (NSBs) of the EU (plus Croatia) and EFTA. The work within CEN is performed in Technical Committees (producing European Standards and Technical Specifications) or in CEN Workshops (producing CEN Workshop Agreements). Full info: 5Hwww.cen.eu CEN is involved in many research projects (INTEG-RISK, iSOIL, USEM, GRIFS, ESCORTS, SMART-CM, SCUTUM, INDIGO ..) having a standardisation component. In cooperation with CENELEC, the group STAIR focuses on Innovation and RTD needs in standardisation and interfaces with the European Commission and other bodies to share information, to ensure more research is done and used for the benefit of standardisation and to maximise dissemination and efficient exploitation of end output of research, through standardisation.

CEN is one of the 3 three European Standards Organisations (ESOs), dealing with all areas except electrotechnical and telecommunications standards. CEN is a major provider of European Standards (ENs) and technical specifications in most all areas of economic activity.

European standards have a unique status since they also are national standards in each of the CEN Member countries. With one common standard in all these countries and every conflicting national standard withdrawn, a product can reach a far wider market with much lower development and testing costs. ENs help build a European Internal Market for goods and services and position Europe in the global economy. More than 60.000 technical experts as well as business federations, consumer and other societal interest organizations are involved in the CEN network that reaches over 600 million people

Activities in D-BOX

CEN will host a standardization activity to standardize relevant D-BOX outcomes as a CEN Workshop Agreement (CWA). CWAs do not bring the obligation for implementation as national standards, as is the case for ENs. The Workshop Agreement procedures are furthermore lean and flexible making the, CWAs a suitable deliverable for innovation projects.
