The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is Europe’s largest application-oriented research organization. On behalf of industry, the service sector and the public administration, Fraunhofer undertakes applied research of direct utility to private and public enterprises and of wide benefit to society. The research efforts are geared entirely to people’s needs: health, security, communication, energy and the environment.

At present, Fraunhofer has 66 institutes and independent research units in Germany. Additionally, there are research centers and representative offices in Europe, USA and Asia. The majority of the 22,000 staff are qualified scientists and engineers, who work with an annual research budget of 1.9 billion Euros. Fraunhofer is the largest German contributor to FP7 and FP7-SEC, and is currently coordinating more than 100 FP7 projects.
